Slovenia: Sanja Grohar Drops "Club Star"
It's about time we heard something new from Sanja Grohar. The Slovenian singer, model and TV personality won the Miss Slovenia competition in 2005 and even took the title of 'Best Playmate' in the Slovenian edition of Playboy a few years ago. Today, she released a new video for a song called "Club Star" (w/ Baby Noel) and there's an odd Sci-Fi theme running through it! Or at least satellites and space probes make cameos, for some reason. Anyway, like this song, which has both a club and pop feel. The last time we checked in with the singer it was re: her 2010 hit "Ogenji." Check out her latest, shot in Spain and directed by Manel Andilla, below.
Synth-Soaked Slovenia Turns The "Tide"
Slovenia can't get enough of the synthesizer, and for this we can all be thankful. Ljubljana's Tide are active like they haven't been in a while, which is saying something for an act that has produced 8 videos over their career so far. Apart from holding the top spot with their hit single "Adieu" recently on the Slovenian national TV Videochart, they've also released a new promo for a great new song called "Hard to Love." The video was shot at various locations in the city center of Ljubljana over the summer and boasts an 80s feel (and sound). Similarly, Slovenia's Torul recently dropped a great synth-soaked track called "In Whole" that also takes a bit of inspiration from the best 1980s acts (Depeche Mode etc). Both videos are below. I'm now forever on team Slovenia, by the way, if anyone asks.
Slovenia's Disco Swingers: Manouche
So what's hot in Slovenia this summer and fall? Apparently it's this song by Manouche called "Kje Si Lubi?" The track is currently number one on at least one radio airplay chart, and it's not hard to see why....the tune is instantly likeable and it's part of a mini swing revival that's taking place in Europe thanks to artists such as Holland's Caro Emerald and the residual heat from songs such as "We No Speak Americano." Check it out below.
Slovenian Roller Skating W/ Katarina Mala
Who wants to go roller skating in Ljubljana with Katarina Mala? The singer released a video last month for her "Ciao Ciao" and it's breezy and perfect for the weekend. The song was written by Marko Gregoric, who has written songs for artists such as Murata & Jos, Paper, Bossa de Novo, Maja Vucic and others. According to the songwriter, "Ciao Ciao" is "about a woman who dares to love to get out of the moral, aesthetic frameworks of society...it's cheerful, wild and uncompromising...like a cat." Kind of agree! Get your groove on with "Ciao Ciao" below.
Slovenia's Mike Vale Is In The House
Quick: name a Slovenian DJ making international waves. Can't think of any? Well now you can. Mike Vale is apparently doing well on Beatport's Tech House chart with this track, "Pretty Woman," which boasts a brand new video that looks fantastic. Vale is new to me, but already big names such as Pete Tong have tipped him as one to watch and it's easy to understand why...tight track for those who appreciate good house music. The released this week promo below was directed by Robert Hedzet and Crt Erjavec.
