A-Ha? No, It's Lithuania's Junior (New Clip)
Who remembers A-Ha's classic 1980's video "Take On Me?" If you liked that one, you're probably going to also like this gem from Lithuania's Junior. The band has been around since 1996 and used to do pretty well in the small market that is their home country. Their "Striptease" album sold about 15,000 copies when it first came out in 1996. Their follow-up in 1997, "Love and Fire" sold about 45,000 copies on cassette(!), a double platinum in Lithuania, their bio claims, anyway. Anyway, more recently, the trio released a music video last month for a song called "Mano Pasaulis" and it looks pretty cool. Check it out below (good song as well, somehow very Saint Etienne-esque). Bonus trivia: Junior has a song called "Facebook" but only 30 Facebook "friends."
Lithuania: Agentūra's "Pildosi Norai Visi"
What's hot in Vilnius this winter? Agentūra's "Pildosi Norai Visi." The song by Agentūra (translates to "Agency") is in the Top 10 currently on several radio stations in Lithuania and the video for it, released late last year, is kind of interesting. Recognized video installation artist Marius Kavaliauskas is one of the names behind the promo, which gives the clip an arty feel. Singers Eve and Victoria play the role of more than 30 different characters in the video, with outfit changes to match (overseen by stylist Just Jasulaitis). But most importantly, this is a great song (one of the songwriters on this track, Adam Powers, has written for Medina and Kylie Minogue before). Directed by Algimantas Mikutėnas, check it. Lithuania: Soda Release "Далеко" Video
Did you know there exists a house/pop act from Lithuania named Soda? You do now. Anyway, last month the trio released a video for their "Далеко" (translates to "away" or similar, per Google translate) and it's not bad (in parts, anyway). Soda are joined by DJ Niki (who by the way calls himself the "king of house") here and the act has been around since the late 1990's, playing everywhere from Poland to Germany over the years. Still get the impression they are not that popular, even within their own country, though. Check Mindaugas Spokauskas, Donald Žvybas and Sarah Buračaitė's latest below.
Hot Clip From Lithuania: "Win The World"
What's one of the hottest music videos in Lithuania this fall? Vincentas Linkevičius and Mr. M's "Win The World." And when I say "hot," keep in perspective that this is only hot among those willing to watch a video by a Lithuanian artist who chooses to sing in English. Anyway, this is a notable offering from Vincent and in parts "Mr M" comes off like a credible rapper. The song is an odd hybrid of pop, R&B and rap but the video is pretty good-looking, by Lithuanian standards (for whatever reason Lithuania lags behind neighboring Latvia when it comes to volume and quality in the music video department). Check it out below. (via 15min.lt)
Likeable Lithuania: Savanorystės Himnas
Normally I'm jaded to this kind of thing, but this video and song is special. Savanorystės Himnas's hit from this past summer is not about sex, drugs or love. Instead, it's a Lithuanian volunteering song. "Let’s Go Along" was commissioned by the REP in Vilnius and was performed by Kaunas City Spumante Choir. The videoclip features volunteers in action and these all appear to be great causes. The song is great and it hit the number five position during its first week at the Top 40 in Lithuania, where it stayed for a month earlier this year. Check it below (h/t europa.eu)
