Finland: Laura Närhi's Frigid Friday Clip

It's freezing in Finland on a Friday. But that's ok, because Laura Närhi's new clip is heating up Helsinki today. The singer, via Warner Music Finland, just uploaded a simply gorgeous-looking promo for her "Hetken Tie On Kevyt" and I can't stop watching it. Laura has some interesting history. Her father is a respected composer in the business for ages, while her mother worked for (and maybe still does work at) BMG in Finland. She's filmed videos before in Belgrade but it looks like this new clip was shot in her own (freezing) nordic nation. And thank God it was, because it's pretty to look at on multiple levels. This song is apparently on the soundtrack to a new Finnish film called "North" that opens in Feb (guessing some of the scenes in this clip are from that forthcoming movie). Sweeping and epic song.

Finland: Chisu Debuts Kohtalon Oma Clip

Ever wondered what happens in a Helsinki supermarket at night after it closes? Well wonder no more! Chisu's great new video for "Kohtalon Oma" (the title track from her latest album) reveals the mysterious late night world of Finnish supermarkets, where older ladies dance in the aisles and Chisu is a night guard (she looks quite nice as a man, oddly enough). This clip comes hot on the heels of her released this October clip for "Sabotage" and the singer is on a proverbial roll as 2011 winds down. Just a wonderful video (by director Misko Iho, Jean-Noël Mustonen and Juge Heikkilä).

Best Finnish Music Videos Of 2011: Top 3

Finland surprised and pleased pop fans in a big way in 2011. Interesting clips from notable artists dropped (the best clip of the year may have actually been Chisu's stylish "Sabotage" while Lauri Ylönen also dropped a memorable video) and a certain Finn-style humor shone through on promos from rock bands such as Reckless Love to multiple rappers. But the best from Finland was pure pop this year. Case in point? Anna Abreu's fantastic "Hysteria," which dropped at the beginning of the year and never looked back (amazing song and clip). Similarly, Kristiina Wheeler's "Ihanaa" pleased pop purists with a winning clip that was simple yet effective in gaining the artist new fans. Finally, one of my favorite Finnish finds in 2011 was rapper Uniikki's fresh-sounding song "Suurempaa." Check all 3 below.

Finland: Kaija Koo Releases New Video

Kaija Koo is new to me but she's certainly not new to Finnish pop fans. The Tuusula-based singer has been making hits since the 1980's and she had a breakthrough in 1993, when her album Tuulten Viemää sold 175K copies, making it the sixth-best selling album in Finnish history. More recently, she has found a home at Warner Music Finland, who know a thing or two about a great song, and "Kaunis Rietas Onnellinen" is indeed very catchy. The song title of her released this month video translates to "Beautiful Happy Lewd Platinum Discs." No idea what that's all about (!), but good song and video below.

Finland: Chisu's Stylish "Sabotage" Clip

This is awesome. Finnish singer Chisu has been riding high on Helsinki pop charts with this song "Sabotage" recently (it's #3 this week) and today she and Warner Music Finland unveiled a vertigo-inducing video for the track that plays on dizzying highs. The clip was shot by Misko Iho and features fantastic cinematography from Juge Heikkilä. I've been a fan of Chisu's for a year now (check her excellent "Baden Baden" here) and nearly everything she touches turns to genius. Sophisticated, understated and epic. Check it.
