A Danish Tears For Fears Cover: Michael Parsberg's "Mad World" Video
You know what instrument dance and pop music needs more of these days? The xylophone (and all its variants). Denmark's Michael Parsberg aims to bring it back with a danceable twist via his cover of 1980's classic "Mad World" by Tears For Fears. Danish percussion duo Safri Duo are on this track and in this video as well (as is Isam Bachiri from Outlandish). This song, of course, has been covered many times before by a number of different artists. It even turned up on the soundtrack of 2001 cult film Donnie Darko, where Gary Jules scored an unlikely hit with his quiet take on the track. But the version below might be the best version yet. Check it below.
Denmark: Sonny Drops "Bad Girl" Video
Here we go, friends. Denmark's Sonny, an artist I've been following for well over a year now on Twitter, has finally delivered on his promise via a fantastic released-today video. "Bad Girl" is every bit as good as Justin Timberlake and the Danish talent, now living in Los Angeles, has a very decent shot at breaking in the States thanks to this song and clip. For those who don't know, Sonny is sort of well known in Denmark thanks to a reality show which focuses on his life in L.A. as a professional dancer and aspiring pop star. Last year he logged some time in the studio with name producers, and the results are quite good, as you'll see below (it also helped land him an American release via Warner Music). Look for his debut album International later this year (3/5/12) and watch his tight-looking promo for "Bad Girl" (shot east of L.A.) below.
Wild New Clip From DK's Who Made Who
So you think American Apparel has edgy ads and billboards? Well Denmark's Who Made Who have one upped the clothing company with their just-released clip for "Inside World." The promo, ironically, features plain clothes, and not a lot of clothes in general, exactly, in the clip (it's sort of NSFW-esque). But the art direction here is just outstanding. Great song as well. I was lucky enough to meet one of the members of this band a few days ago here in L.A. (the band played (DJ set) a party at the annual NAMM convention) and it's clear all these guys have talent in spades. Wrote about Who Made Who last year when they dropped their fantastic "Every Minute Alone" clip but this is even better. Have a look below at yet another genius video from the CPH-based act, directed by Lasse Martinussen.
Dark Denmark: Tina Dico's "Helt Alene"
Blown away by this just-released (after an MTV Denmark premiere over the weekend) video by Denmark's Suspekt and Tina Dickow. "Helt Alene" (translates to "quite alone" or similar) is one of the best-looking clips out of Europe anywhere so far in 2012, but it's a bit dark in theme. I don't speak Danish, but the promo seems to touch on the despair and lonliness of drug addiction, particularly cocaine addiction (as alluded to visually in the video). Tina is Denmark's answer to Sia or similar, and Suspekt may as well be Eminem or similar. Add it all up and you have a very strong track that leans on nice production that sounds a bit trip-hoppy thowback, yet feels fresh with sweeping string arrangements/spooky synths.I'd be willing to bet the director of this video, Michel Winckler-Krogh, wins some kind of 'Best Of' award in 2012 for what you'll see below. Original and arresting work.
A Star Is Born? Soluna Samay Wins DMGP
Moments ago, Denmark chose its representative for the 2012 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The winner is Soluna Samay, who won the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix with a tune called "Should've Known Better." Yesterday, an official video was released for the song, and you can see it below. I had high hopes for a few other entries this year at DMGP, but "Should've Known Better" is a very good song and it should represent Denmark well this year in Baku at ESC. Have a look below at a possible future star in Denmark and maybe even further into Europe (should she win or even place in the top 5).
