Belarus' Best Band: Litesound ("Vegas")
What would happen if Coldplay, Nickelback, The Fray and Creed had a baby and raised the child in Minsk? It would grow up listening to Litesound. This band is new to me but they have been around a decade or so and have won all kinds of awards in Belarus and beyond. Their latest award in their country is for 'Best Music Video of 2011' for the clip below, "See You In Vegas" (which just dropped last month). The best part about this band is they seem to have a serious America fetish! They named a past record "Going To Hollywood" and the video below is making me feel patriotic for my own country. But these guys filmed "See You In Vegas" in Minsk and Baranovichi. Nice trick, nice clip. Check it out below.
Belarus' Best: Meet Alyona Lanskaya
So today Belarus revealed the five finalists for their Eurovision Song Contest rep in 2012. One of the five is a singer named Alyona Lanskaya and she is awesome. Last year she released a video that hardly anyone saw for "Life Is OK" and it's worth watching. She's a future star laying in wait and I'm now pulling for her to rep Belarus for sure (the finals go down January 28 in a live TV event on Belarus 1, voting is done via SMS, calls to mobile and fixed telephone lines). Of note: this tune features the lyric "Can you play my favorite disco/on the way to San Francisco." Swear to God. Check it out below. Hidden Europop gems, people.
Belarus: Meet Stanislava, Minsk's Minx
Who's ready to meet the soon-to-be hottest thing going in Belarus? Stanislava is new on the scene and last year she released a good under-the-radar song called "Baby." Late last month she released a video for the track and hardly anyone has seen it, but that changes starting today (I hope). As far as I can tell, she has Russian management, but it seems even in Russia she's not yet well-known. Check out the Belarus beauty in action below (song in English).
Anastasia Vinnikova Loves Belarus In Clip
So Anastasia Vinnikova loves Belarus. How do I know? Because she keeps singing as much over and over and over again in this new clip released earlier this week for Eurovision. Belarus changed the song at the last minute to "I Love Belarus," and this is a better song than the one they previously had chosen to rep Belarus at Eurovision, but it still probably won't win. The chorus is a scream, however, and I kind of like it. For some reason I've been obsessed with Minsk ever since I was a kid, so I guess I love Belarus, too (does it count that I dated a girl from Belarus in San Francisco a few years ago?).
