Swiss/Austrian Dubstep Pop: Tom Novy + Vera Böhnisch's "Thelma & Louise"
Germany's Kontor Records just can't stop cranking out the awesome lately. The latest clip uploaded by the label comes via Swiss DJ Tom Novy and features Austrian singer Vera Katharina Böhnisch (aka "veralovesmusic"). The best part? The song is fucking named "Thelma & Louise" and features dubstep drops so sick you'll feel like driving off a cliff, just like in the Hollywood movie the track is named after. But the tune is a pop jam at heart and it's only a matter of time before U.S. artists start really going for the proverbial dubstep pop jugular (and not just flirting around the edges, a la the ubiquitous dubstep breakdown instrumental at the end of pop songs, as heard in recent Britney Spears offerings etc). Score one for Switzerland and Austria!
Austria's LMFAO: Meet "Trackshittaz"
Wow. Just wow. I've written about Austria's Trackshittaz before (most notably last year when I blogged about their awesome American football (!) themed clip for "Touchdown") but a few things have changed in the meantime. Somehow, Trackshittaz are in the running to actually represent Austria at Eurovision this year. Yes, the song below, "Woki Mit Deim Popo," is the tune Austria may indeed send to Baku, unbelievably. The other thing that's new with these two in 2012 is that Sony Music Germany is now down with Trackshittaz and are actively pushing the duo to a wider audience in Deutschland. I know I've used the "X's LMFAO" modifier before on this blog, but these guys are really a lot like LMFAO. Check out their brand new clip below, which hit You Tube today after a Viva TV premiere.
Austria's Eurovision Hope: "Crazy Swing"
I've been just stunned at the poor choices Austria has this year for their possibles to rep Vienna at the annual Eurovision Song Contest this year. We've got a drag queen. We've got an electro-rap act that has good songs, but the one they chose for ESC 2012 is awful. And the list goes on. However, there is one jam that everyone can agree might not embarrass Austria: !DelaDap's "Crazy Swing." The tune is very much in keeping with Austria's newfound love of updated takes on swing music (see Parov Stelar's "Catgroove") and it might be enough to win over everyone. But !Deladap are not really that well known. And electro rappers Trackshittaz are huge in Austria with many young female fans (and they just signed with Sony Music Germany). Who knows what will happen, but let's pray that the song below becomes the official 2012 ESC anthem for Austria.
Official Awful Austrian Anthem For Winter
Hey did you know terrible Europop can be used as an effective marketing tool? It can! Exhibit A is Austrian liqueur Stroh (it's the "spirit of Austria"), who put together a fake girl group called The Rumbar Girls and they made a video for a song called "In The Snow." According to the fine people at Stroh, "it's the best and greatest après ski song of 2012" and "the perfect viral party song for après ski resorts like St. Anton, Saalbach or Mayrhofen, where you can rock Christmas and party all night long!" Um, not so sure about that? But if you drink enough Stroh I'm sure this song might make sense at about 2 a.m. Actually, scratch that, this song makes no sense even if you're Austrian and wasted. But it exists. And it's got over half a million streams, so strap on skis and get ready for "In The Snow" below.
Austria: In The House Via Global Deejays
Austria's Global Deejays are back in the mix with a released-today clip for "Hardcore Vibes." The Dutch/Austrian duo, based in Vienna, had a big international hit in 2004 and 2005 with "The Sound of San Francisco." More recently, they've had success with a track called "Bring It Back," which actually has done quite well in America (it's currently on Billboard's dance chart at #8 this week). But "Hardcore Vibes" is even better, with a pulsing electro-house feel that will win them even more fans in America in the coming months. These guys have worked with a lot of vocal talent (everyone from Denmark's Ida Corr to Technotronic) and they appear to be on the rise this winter. Check out their latest below.
