Aussie Europop For Germans: Parralox
So I'm still in Australia this weekend and having a great time, despite the fact I'm not always able to get online. Here's a band I've been interested in for a while now, Parralox. The act has a lot of fans (and a label/promotion company, which is how I found out about them) based in Germany, but they hail from Melbourne. Hardly anyone I know in the U.S. is aware of them, which is a shame, because songs like their "Isn't It Strange" crackle with promise (see below). It's like Depeche Mode fronted by a female with 1980s-inspired pop elements. They even cover Radiohead's "Creep." What's not to like about this act? See "Strange" below (clip from April).
Aussie Cascada-esque Cutie: Zoë Badwi
Yes, I'm well aware everyone has already blogged this clip, but I've just landed on the other side of the world (Perth, Australia) and the first thing I put on was Zoë Badwi. First became familiar with this singer last year via her excellent "Freefallin'" and her latest, "Carry Me Home," is similarly winning. Australia is not my beat so I'm not going to pretend like I've followed her whole career (check blogs like Pop Trash Addicts for more on her), but just based on "Freefallin'" and "Carry Me Home," it's obvious that Zoë can take her career anywhere she wants around the globe at this point. Great voice and love this Euro-sounding song below (the video for which dropped earlier this summer). Check it.
Havana Brown "Runs The Night" In Berlin
Guess who's big in Germany? Havana Brown. The DJ and recording artist is actually from Australia (where I'm heading tonight), but it's Deutschland that seems to be giving her the warmest welcome outside of her native country so far. "We Run The Night" is currently in the top 10 on Germany's official singles charts (where I found out about her) and it's not hard to see why: very au courant sounding track that seems to be one part Rihanna, one part Cascada and one part Dev. Also, it doesn't hurt that Brown looks like a German model in this clip, which was released a few months ago. Check it out below. Nice Euro-influenced pop/R&B/dance single.
Classic: Zlad's Elektronik Supersonik Clip
This is a few years old now but it's a 100% certified viral classic. If you have yet to see it, it's pretty much a must-watch. "Zlad" is actually an Austrailan man named Santo Cilauro and he has purposefully created the worst music video of all time. "Elektronik Supersonik" is genius, however, and there's a whole backstory to this song and clip. Zladko "ZLAD" Vladcik is from the country of Molvania (haha) and the song below was sadly disqualified from Eurovision contention in 2006. The outrage! Anyway, this video now lives on forever and it may just feature the best lyrics of all time.
