Norway's Madcon get "freaky" with new hit
Sure, there are hundreds of blogs posting on the new Kylie Minogue video today, but where else are you going to read about Madcon's just-released clip? I made fun of Madcon's hit "Glow" earlier this summer, but the duo's clip for "Freaky Like Me" is actually quite good. Like, as good as any pop or rap tune currently ensconced in the U.S. top 10. Have a listen below. This song has a real shot at American airplay and it will be interesting to see what happens next year with Madcon in America.
Germany flips for fallen pop star
I loved Kim Wilde when I was younger. "Kids in America" was one of the better new wave hits of the 1980s (and her "Chequered Love" remains one of my favorite tunes of all time: see below for video). Now, the English singer has found fame in Germany, of all places. Here she is in a video with 80s German icon Nena from a few years ago. Last month, she released an album via a Columbia Deutschland/Sony and "Lights Down Low" is the first single from the disc (which has no UK or US release date as of yet). Forget big in Japan: Kim's big in Germany!
Here is a clip for underrated 1981 Wilde song "Chequered Love":
Domestic Danish dame cooks up hit
I think I'm moving to Copenhagen. I'm in love with Louise Dubiel and I don't care what anyone else says anymore. This new Universal Denmark artist is adorable, even when she dates some real stiffs. Watch her released-this-week clip for "Verdens Dårligste Dejligste" below.
Flasback Friday: Falco!
I grew up watching clips from (RIP) Falco, but as a child I apparently missed all the warning signs that were hinted at not only in this awesome clip for "Der Kommissar" (notice the coke references!) but heavily examined in the biopic that was released (sadly) only in Europe (staring Grace Jones!). This 1982 song was always my favorite by the Austrian legend. The video remains perfect to this day. I mean, who can make a low budget clip this fascinating simply by running in place for three minutes? Falco, thats who, bitches. Earlier this year, the former king of Austrian pop spoke from the grave via a newly released video ("Kissing in the Kremlin") from his final (I think) record. Falco: just like 2pac. Thug life, friends!
Milk: Big in Belgium
No, not the drink, the band. I just became familiar with Milk Inc., and this seems to be one of those duos that never really made much of an impact in America despite a decade in the game, yet they remain big in Belgium. "Chasing the Wind" is their latest single and this clip dropped in July. As an astute You Tube commenter notes: "The video is a little bit boring in comparison with the song which contains quite good lyrics but luckily the huge boobs from Linda make a hell of a difference." Enough said. Check out the video (filmed in Belgium and Spain) below.
Portugal "plays" with Santamaria
What's hot in Lisbon this summer? Apparently this track by Santamaria. "Tudo de mim para ti" (off their top 10 record "Play") is total Eurodance/Europop and I like it. You'd think these ladies might be able to find some better looking guys to hang out with as they party on a boat? Oh wait. These guys are in the band. Better luck next time, girls! Not sure why six people are needed to make tracks like this. File under fun regardless.
Dutch dork tops charts
How is this possible? Dries Roelvink has topped the charts in the Netherlands with this 100% awful song, "Alleen Door Jou." For starters, the guy looks like my dad, but really, the song has very few redeeming qualities. This video isn't helping, either. Can anyone explain how it's possible Holland would let this happen? And yes, I'm aware he used to be a soccer player or something. Still, that does not excuse the horror below.
Eivør covers Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love"
Many have tried to cover Kate Bush over the years. Some succeed, many fail. Eivør's audacious cover of Bush's "Hounds of Love" falls somewhere in between, but the video, released yesterday, is notable visually and you've got to give the Danish singer (from the Faroe Islands) credit for tackling this classic (not an easy song to get right). Thoughts? I've included the original (one of my favorites by Kate) below as well.
Tóth Gabi: Hungary's hottest?
Tóth Gabi seems to be Budapest's answer to Pink, and she certainly can sing. Earlier this summer, Gabi released this stylish video for "Elég Volt," and it's not bad. It's certainly better than her sister's work (Toth Veronika is also famous in Hungary after winning their version of "American Idol" a few years ago). Have a look at Vera's sister's (Gabi) most recent video below.
Slovakian "Twiins" do "Boys"
Well this is interesting. Slovakia's Twiins have moved to Los Angeles. They also just released a new video last month for their late '09/early 2010 single "Boys Boys Boys," a cover of the Italian Europop smash by Sabrina Salerno that I wrote about earlier this month. I have no idea why they are now here in L.A., but I suspect they are trying to become stars. Call me ladies!
